Is it Mambo or Joomla? Joomla has it's origins in Mambo and the two projects are quite similar at this stage. Most modules, components and templates are interchangeable between the two projects. Joomla's team were the core developers of Mambo until November 2005 when the original creators of Mambo (who released the project into the Public Domain) wanted to begin profiting from the developers (volunteer) efforts. The team didn't appreciate their actions and the restrictions being applied to them and decided to take their skills and current codebase and create their own project - Thus Joomla was born!
